Team Leads from the original pilot sites (Richmond Department of Justice Services-Division of Adult Programs, Staunton, Augusta/Waynesboro (SAW) and Prince William County Criminal Justice Services) collaborated with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and Advancing Pretrial Policy & Research (APPR) to organize and facilitate a workshop on Monday, September 9, 2024, during the 51st Annual Conference and Training Institute hosted by the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA) in New Orleans, LA. The workshop was titled, “A New Way to VPRAI: The Public Safety Assessment.” During this workshop, the panelists (pictured below from left: Luis Mercado-Richmond, Steven R. Austin-PWC, Tomaudrie Thomas-PWC and Samantha Honig-SAW) discussed the process for transitioning from the Virginia Pretrial Risk Assessment Instrument (VPRAI) to the Public Safety Assessment (PSA) and highlighted the system-wide approach to implementation in their respective localities. The workshop was well attended, with many in the audience expressing a strong interest in hearing about this project in Virginia as their own jurisdictions were considering moving from the use of the VPRAI towards implementing the Public Safety Assessment.
