Function
Performs comprehensive background investigations of potential pretrial defendants. Assists the court in determining offender's suitability for pretrial supervision.
Examples of Duties
·  Interviews arrested individuals who have been detained and have been admitted to bail, but are unable to secure their release due to inadequate financial resources. Secures information, such as physical, psychological, and social factors, contributing to the client's current situation. Determines eligibility for participation in pretrial services. Evaluates the client's capabilities.
·  Completes a comprehensive background investigation verifying criminal history, residency stability, employment history, and ties to the community. Obtains information through use of the NCIC/VCIN system. Determines alcohol and/or drug use.
·  Based on acquired knowledge and sound judgement, performs a risk assessment prior to initial court appearance. Makes a recommendation to the court concerning the client's suitability for pretrial supervision.
·  Works with the Pretrial Case Manager to verify residency through home contact, if needed. Informs Case Manager of discrepancies in information obtained. Works with the Case Manager to investigate reported violations of pretrial release conditions and contracts. May also perform/provide Case Management /Supervision to a reduced caseload of defendants. Conducts urine screens as needed.
·  Provides information and assistance to the Police Department in the apprehension of pretrial diverts who fail to appear in court on their court date.
·  Maintains data as required for reporting purposes.

Function
Provides probation supervision and counseling for low to medium risk local offenders and pretrial defendants referred to the Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) by the courts.
Examples of Duties
•Maintains community service work (CSW) sites. Updates CSW site information and visits CSW sites to meet with site supervisors
•Maintains flow of CSW hourly forms from the site to CJA. Verifies hours worked by offenders.
•Creates assignments and reassignments to CSW sites.
•Interviews offender or defendants to secure information such as physical, psychological, and social factors contributing to offender or defendant situation.
•Verifies intake information.
•Conducts screenings and assessments using standardized instruments to evaluate the offender or defendant capacities and environmental situation.
•Counsels offender or defendant individually in-groups regarding plans for meeting needs and assist offender or defendant mobilize their inner capacities and environmental resources to improve social functioning.
•Facilitates offender or defendant service referrals based on Court order and Risk need assessments.
•Monitors offender or defendant adherence to service referrals.
•Provides assistance to offender or defendant in obtaining employment, and developing pro-social attitudes. Refers offenders to community resources and other organizations.
Conducts urine screens as needed.
•Provides vocational and personal counseling when required. Monitors payment of court costs, fines, supervision fees, and victim restitution.
•Compiles records and provide written progress reports on all offenders and defendants.
•Initiates revocation proceedings when needed.
•Administers intermediate sanction procedures for minor offender or defendant violations.
•Testifies in court on show cause hearings and informs judiciary of successful completion.
•Maintains data as required for reporting purposes.
